Religious tourism - Panagia Episkopi

The Panagia Episkopi was built in the 11th century by Alexios Komninos. It is a middle Byzantine church dedicated to the Assumption which is located in the village of Episkopi Gonia, at the foot of the mountain of Prophet Elias and just six kilometers from Fira.

The church is cruciform with a dome, which has received several additions. In place of the temple was formerly aisled basilica, parts and sculptures which were incorporated in the middle Byzantine building.

Most important elements of the interior decoration are marble iconostasis and frescoes, the dating of which still divides the Byzantinologists and placed between the end of 11th and late 12th century.
